About Dr. Genderson

I am a licensed clinical psychologist specializing in evidence-based treatment for adolescents and adults.  I work with individuals facing a wide range of emotional and behavioral challenges, including anxiety, depression, OCD, trauma and PTSD, relationship challenges, life transitions, and other sources of stress. Having trained at leading anxiety treatment centers in the United States and Australia, I have developed particular expertise in the treatment of anxiety disorders and related concerns.

Therapeutic Approach

I strive to help clients build lives that are guided by their values rather than their fears while creating a space where clients feel understood, challenged, and supported.   I take a collaborative and compassionate approach, helping clients better understand the thoughts, emotions, and behavioral patterns that contribute to distress while developing practical skills and more effective ways of coping.

I tailor treatment to each client’s needs, drawing from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), mindfulness-based approaches, and insight-oriented work. This integrative approach allows me to combine evidence-based strategies with an appreciation for each client’s unique goals, strengths, and life experiences.

Education and Training

I earned my B.A. from Emory University and my M.A. and Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from Boston University.  I have worked in a variety of settings, including community mental health centers, college counseling centers, academic medical centers (Massachusetts General Hospital, the Baltimore Veterans Affairs Medical Center), specialized mood and anxiety disorder clinics, and the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH).  I have been in private practice since 2013.

I have trained and worked at internationally recognized centers specializing in the treatment of anxiety and related disorders, including the Center for Anxiety and Related Disorders (CARD) in Boston, the Baltimore VA Medical Center, and the Clinical Research Unit for Anxiety and Depression (CRUfAD) in Sydney, Australia.  As a result, I have developed a particular expertise in the treatment of mood and anxiety disorders, including generalized anxiety, obsessive-compulsive disorder, social anxiety, trauma-related disorders/PTSD, phobias, and panic disorder.

In addition to my clinical work, I have contributed to the dissemination of evidence-based mental health care through scholarly writing.  I have published numerous articles in peer reviewed journals and co-authored books on best practices in mental health treatment, including:

Andrews, G., Mahoney, A., Hobbs, M., Genderson, M. (2016). Treatment of generalized anxiety disorder: Therapist guides and patient manual. Oxford University Press.
